The 2026 Global
Report of the
Lancet Countdown

The 10th indicator report of the Lancet Countdown finds that health impacts are escalating faster than climate action with experts calling for climate change to be declared a global health emergency.

While progress has been made to deliver real health gains through clean energy investment, health system leadership and health-protecting legislation, these positive signs are not enough to offset the harm from the impacts of fossil-fuel driven climate change.

The report represents the work of 146 experts from 71 collaborating institutions, monitoring progress across 54 indicators, including four new indicators introduced this year, providing the most comprehensive assessment yet of the links between climate change and health.

Key Messages

THE HEALTH IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE HAVE GROWN OVER THE PAST DECADE COMPARED WITH THE PREVIOUS ONE

As greenhouse-gas emissions continued to break records over the past decade, many impacts of climate change have accelerated, increasingly affecting health and survival worldwide and causing an international health emergency.

CLIMATE ACTION IS DELIVERING HEALTH GAINS – BUT NOT FAST ENOUGH

Ambitious climate-commitments since the Pais agreement have delivered measurable health benefits but these gains are not reaching everyone and progress is too slow.

CLIMATE CHANGE MUST BE ACKNOWLEDGED AND ADDRESSED AS A GLOBAL HEALTH EMERGENCY TO PROTECT HEALTH AND SURVIVAL

Responding to systematic and institutional constraints is essential to ensure that climate action is equitable, informed by evidence and focused on protecting people’s health.

Quotes

Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand and Chair of the Lancet Countdown Board

“This report is a stark warning that climate change is a health emergency. What’s missing is not evidence, but the political will to act on it. Governments must double down on their climate action commitments and rebuild momentum for international co-operation.”

Quotes

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization

“The evidence is undeniable: climate change is one of the greatest threats to health facing humanity. Its impacts are already being seen through worsening heat stress, extreme weather events, food insecurity and disease.  But this report also reminds us that the solutions are within reach. By placing health at the heart of climate policies, we can save millions of lives, build more resilient societies, and deliver a healthier future for all.”

Quotes

Professor Marina Romanello, Executive Director of the Lancet Countdown

“Real progress has been made in clean energy, health system readiness, and health-protective regulation, all of which are already delivering health benefits to local communities. However, progress has been too slow, too small, and isn’t reaching those who need it most.

That is why we are calling for climate change to be formally recognised as a global health emergency, with health placed at the centre of every climate decision.”
